How important are machines and technology to the advancement of civilization?

There was a time I wanted Geneva Steel gone--it made me sick every winter and I didn't like Joe Cannon. But now, looking at these photographs, I see the heart of this company: the honest men and women who worked here. You can feel the loyalty and trust they had. If you look close, you can almost see a vibrant company and those people working again. It is a sad and heartwarming at the same time.

In a word, "extremely," but with a caveat. To the extent that we allow our focus on "machines and technology" to diminish or negate our concern for maintaining our human integrity, our dependence on God for direction, and our loyalty to family and nation, we become losers through false agendas and priorities. We define much of our ideas of advancement based on machines and technology. Think of our definitions of the world: third world country, first world, world power. All of these are used as definitions of civilization. The human mind yearns to create and to grow. Technology is merely an outcropping of this desire.

Machines and technology are a reflection of the people and their relationship with one another, their environment, etc. Show me the machines and technology that exist and i can tell you about the people. It is the people and their relationships with one another and other people in other countries that define a civilization and how "advanced " they are.
